2003-10-24 - 12:17 p.m. - Cycle day:

I feel awful - I've spent most of the rare moments I have to update this diary writing about my own issues and haven't taken the time to document the innumerable changes that Meredith has gone through in the last seven weeks. There've been the minor physical quirks, like the clogged tear duct that made us (irrationally) question our decision to waive eye antibiotic, and her bout with baby acne, and the recently detected umbilical hernia (seeing a baby's bellybutton protrude an inch out of her stomach is a pretty unsettling sight, even when you know it's painless). And then there are all these unexpected things that we suddenly notice - the incredible growth of her eyelashes, the almost non-existence of her pinky toenails. And now she's changing in obvious developmental ways, too. She can hold her head up much more, she makes noises other than crying, and best of all, she can be entertained - she's now capable of seeing the mobile over her crib, and on a good day, it completely fascinates her.

I'm still a chicken about taking her out in public, though. The combination of her unpredictable moods and my still developing confidence with breastfeeding make it easier to just stay home. That's got its own downside, though. I don't think I've been out of the house all week, and I'm sure that affects my patience and creativity. I also started back at work this week, so when she is in a good mood (i.e., sleeping), I feel like I need to use that time to be productive and can't "waste" it going for a walk or taking her out somewhere. But there I go griping again. Back to the good stuff ...

M. will be taking her first trip to a ballpark tonight! Our local AAA stadium is showing Field of Dreams on their Jumbotron, and we'll be watching from the comfort of a luxury suite. It'll be like a really nice drive-in movie, and I'm excited to expose M. to one of the Holy Trinity of baseball movies at this young an age. Her grandfather is very pleased.
