2003-09-15 - 6:16 p.m. - Cycle day: MH had her first doctor's visit today. If we trust the 3rd year med student who weighed her, she's up to 8 lbs, 5 oz - more than a pound over her birth weight. Dr. Hippie was very surprised; in fact, I believe his exact words were "That's almost impossible!" Apparently they expect it to take 1-2 weeks for a newborn to just get back to birth weight. What can I say, she's already advanced. Everything else looked good. She's got some goop in her left eye that concerned us (read: The Husband) a little, but the doc said it was just a blocked tear duct and would likely clear up on its own in the next few weeks. MH was, predictably, quite perfectly behaved throughout the entire exam, even when they took her temperature. And she sat patiently while we waited over an hour for the doctor to see us. The wait was actually fun, though, because we got to talking with a couple who was due with their first child today. The mama was feeling more than ready to have their kid, especially since she was still feeling really sick - she was only 8 lbs over her pre-pregnancy weight. We talked all about labor and delivery and the hospital and Dr. Hippie and picking names and handling family and just about anything else you'd want to cover. It was nice to be able to share our experience with other people who are so close to going through it themselves. I need to write their names down somewhere and maybe look them up later. It would be good to know other people with a newborn.
