2003-09-12 - 4:55 p.m. - Cycle day:

The days are already getting away from me. I can't believe that Meredith is a week old. I know this is just the beginning, but there's so much going on in our lives and in my head right now that I'm scared of forgetting them but don't have the time to write them down. So my apologies if this entry is a bit scattered, but I just want to type some things out while I have a chance.

For the first few days especially, it felt like the baby and Ihad this odd symbiotic relationship, like E.T. and Eliott. We both spent the day she was born completely crashed out and barely able to eat. Her energy level has picked up along with mine, although we both would prefer to nap most of the day. She's really not enjoying having her diapers changed, and I feel sympathetic toward her every time I have to go through the whole comlicated post-partum bathroom routine - warm up water to fill peri-rinse bottle, sit down as delicately as possible, try to relax and not pull at my stitches at the same time, change my pad, pee as much as possible, rinse off, wipe very, very carefully, and then wait a couple hours and do it all over.

Speaking of diapers, the cloth thing is going fine. I sort of messed up the first load of laundry, but I've pretty much figured it out now. The only real inconvenience is the extra time is takes, since she gets so irritated during the process.

Speaking of which ... Crying baby ... gotta go ...
