2005-03-16 - 9:54 p.m. - Cycle day:

So the kiddo and I spent a week visiting my folks while The Husband was in Europe for work (that's the story, anyway), and my mother decided that M. needed to be using more words. Reasonable, I suppose. I hadn't realized how much I was relying on my own interpretation of her grunts and various other inarticulate noises. I knew the water "unng" from the hungry "ngee," so we did alright. But this whole coherent vocabulary thing is pretty amazing. And also a tidge frustrating, like when she discovered she could get my instant attention by converting "mamamamama" to "Mommeee!" All in all, though, it helps us both. Maybe I've been too literal-minded, expecting her to speak clearly and obviously. She's also a babbler, so it's hard to pull the actual English words out of her non-stop stream of communication. She's been able to understand us for quite a while now, but I can feel her level of aggravation decrease when I repeat a word back to her. And, just for fun and future reference, here is a list of those words (the ones I recognize, anyway)...
Mommy
Daddy
Cha Cha (grandma)
Pop (grandpa)
Cat/Kitty
Doggie
Cheese
Eat
Thirsty
Nurse
Water
Ice
Ball
Bath
Hot
Cold
Cool
Cute
Sock
Shirt
Kiss
Keys
Night-night
Those are the ones we hear all the time, anyway. It seems like she can repeat back pretty much anything, or she'll just randomly bust something out. Like when we got a FedEx delivery and she said "Package!" clear as day. It's astounding, really.
