2005-02-04 - 12:37 p.m. - Cycle day:

Random developmental milestone update: M. peed on the toilet today! For the last couple days, she's been pretty curious about what goes on with the whole potty thing, so I started letting her sit on the toilet after her bath (which is when she usually lets it fly all over the carpet before we can get a diaper on her). She sits there all peacefully, then reaches for the toilet paper. I hand her a square, she wipes in the correct general area, drops the paper in the bowl and then wants to start all over. It's a fun game, but prior to today, not especially productive. But then this morning, I set her up there after my own just-out-of-bed pitstop and she actually peed! And then wiped! Did I mention that she turns 17 months old tomorrow? My child, the urinary genius. I don't expect any consistency for a long time yet, but at least she's getting the concept. And that's cool. I hadn't even dreamed about the end of diapers, but now it's not such a distant hope.

In other news, hey, I have a job! Not only a job, but a business. Another mom and I have taken ownership of the natural parenting store where I spent most of M.'s first year and a half. Neither one of us could bear the thought of it closing when the owner decided she needed to go back to work, so we've been putting together a business plan and exploring financial options and it looks like we're going to be able to make it a go. Whoo! So it's exciting and terrifying all at once, much like the parenting process itself. The only thing really troubling me right now are the transitional loose ends that need to get tied up (overdue phone bills, outstanding sales tax, etc.). We can't start making money until everything's officially in our names, and that can't happen until all these details are put right. I'm sure we'll get it taken care of in the next week or two, though, and then we'll be good to go. I've gotta say, there's a sick thrill in being able to order 10 slings and 12 pairs of handmade baby shoes at the same time.
